looks like we went straight from summer to winter in Calgary.  leaves did not turn yellow/red and fall on the ground---they were frozen right on the trees.  our highs are barely 0C, it's approaching 1pm and -6C/20F plus wind chill outside as i write this.  or is this normal and could it be that we had a long summer and got spoiled by it?  brrrrrrrr cold!

We had the same nonsense here in Winnipeg - 10 cm of snow in early October! There was almost no fall color (which in itself is unusual this late in the season) and the leaves were fully on the trees. Now most are crispy brown, and some trees just dumped all of their leaves in a single shot today. I couldn't be more disappointed - how can it be fall without at least some color??

I have never, ever seen such a year as we've had. January, February, March, April, May, June, July and August were all well below normal temperatures, which is a record for the most consecutive months in a row below normal. Then September was the hottest on record, and it was also the only time in recorded history when September was the hottest month of the year. And then 10cm of snow 1 week into October...

Stop this ship - I want to get off!!

We had about two weeks of autumn in Saskatoon before the snow caught us by surprise. My green ash tree in the front yard had hardly dropped any leaves until the sudden cold snap. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, it decided enough was enough and dropped them ALL in one day (kind of like the Whomping Willow from Harry Potter).

This weekend it's supposed to get to 15, so we'll have to get out and rake up all the wet leaves before the next snow falls!

Experience is the same exactly in Saskatoon... All the trees have their leaves (freeze dried) except for the ash and Manitoba maple.

-The last 9 months far below normal (Dec - Aug)
-4 nights of frost in June recorded in Saskatoon (One night -4C... ) Unprecidented.

-The hottest Sept on record (ave. high in Stoon for the month was 24C.

-The coldest Oct. so far on record.

Truly, truly bizarre...

all the effort that went into researching, hunting, acquiring plants for fall colors---all for naught.  this fall the birch is not yellow, the amur maple is not red, viburnum lentago not yellow-red, grass is not gold.  this fall the color is black and 'blue'.  there was a missing warning label or caveat somewhere.  should say "amelanchier the best for Autumn Brilliance but only when fall is good" :-]

is it true that the changing of colors has something to do with storing of food and preparing for winter, and because many shrubs and trees were deprived of this they'll have a difficult time coming back next year?  is there anything i can do like mayhaps use a root feeder and apply liquid fertilizer in spring?

thanks,
